# Jem & Fix Furnes — shelf prices read in store, 30 July 2026

**Why this file exists:** `BENCH-BUILD.html` §5 was built on web-catalogue prices and said in as
many words *"read these off the shelf"* — three of its open questions are now closed, and one new
material family (benkeplater) turned up that the web catalogue never surfaced. All numbers below
are transcribed from photographs of the shelf labels; kr/m² is computed, not printed.

**Everything is priced `pr. STK`** — per piece, not per metre or per m². The only exception is
the trelast rack, where the label carries a small `Pris pr. M` in the top corner. See §5 for why
that changes how you shop.

## 1. The one that matters — lekt

Cheapest 48×48 found in Hamar so far: Byggmax/Bergene Holm reference was 129 kr for the same
4,8 m stick (`SHOPPING-TRIP.md` §4), Obs Bygg 24,90 kr/m. But see §5 — cheapest per metre is not
the same as cheapest for the job, and Obs sells *i fallende lengder* (unverified).

**Not photographed, still needed: 36×48.** The bench battens must be ≤40 mm to seat in the
Stanley bukk's notch (`BENCH-BUILD.html` §2). 48×48 will not fit. Check this on the next trip —
it is the one gap in the list.

## 2. Benkeplater — the new find

Stacked flat on pallet racking, not with the panels.

**These are the best workbench top on the shelf and you cannot get one home.** 28 mm laminate
worktop is heavier, flatter and more wipe-clean than plywood, PVA doesn't stick to it, and 35 kg
of mass is a feature on a bench that otherwise walks. But every one is 610 mm wide × 2,0–3,0 m
long — the exact "wide and flat" shape capped at the Fabia's 1520 mm boot floor
(`BENCH-BUILD.html` §7) — and a 610 mm slab cannot be crosscut on a 305 mm mitre saw.

Filed as **the upgrade**, not the buy: takstativ, trailer, borrowed van, or a Jem & Fix cutting
service if one exists (ask — Danish discount yards usually don't have one).

The 379 kr for 12 mm kryssfiner confirms the figure `BENCH-BUILD.html` §3 built the bench on.
The 49,90 hardboard confirms `HOBBY-BRIEF.md` §4's book-press platen price — it is also the
sacrificial layer for the bench top.

## 4. Shelf boards and glued panels

### 2400 mm — cheapest per m², won't fit the car flat

Aggregators disagreed by a factor of five on these. Actual shelf prices:

**The finding: at 400 mm width, the 2400 mm limtre panel is cheaper in absolute kroner than the
2000 mm shelf board — 389 vs 479 — for 20 % more wood.** Same thickness, same width, 90 kr less.
The 2400 costs you the car problem; the 2000 threads over the folded seats comfortably. That is
the whole trade, and it is worth 90 kr either way. Put them side by side and check the grade
before assuming they're the same product; the article-number series differ (9066927 vs 9062751).

The 28 mm furu at 569/719 kr is the stiffness upgrade `BENCH-BUILD.html` §5 was hoping for —
sag goes with the cube of thickness, so 28 mm spans ~800 mm where 18 mm wants 600. It costs
roughly 50 % more per m² than the 18 mm. For a bookshelf that carries books, it's the honest buy.

## 5. Why "pr. STK" changes how you shop

Norwegian byggevare traditionally prices trelast per løpemeter and plate per m². Jem & Fix runs
the Danish discount model: one number per piece, no unit price except in the fine print on the
timber rack. Two consequences worth internalising:

1. **You always pay for the whole piece.** The offcut is yours whether you want it or not. So the
   cheapest material is not the cheapest way to get your parts — the right buy is the piece whose
   dimensions divide cleanly into your cut list. Optimise the cut list, not the kr/m².
2. **Per-m² comparisons are yours to make, not theirs.** The table above is what the labels
   deliberately don't tell you, and it's where the outliers show up: hobbyplate hvit at 277 kr/m²
   against hylle eik at 1 165, both filed as "shelf".
