Build the saw bench today.

A very detailed, first-timer guide to turning the four Stanley trestles, one birch-plywood panel and two battens into a stable, folding home for the SKIL 1321 mitre saw.

You have the board + two lekter

Start with the eight-screw top.

Ignore the saw and the side supports for the moment. Your first finished object is one removable unit: the board with both lekter fixed beneath it.

Before drilling: put the unplugged saw somewhere else. Open two trestles on firm, flat ground. The 36 mm side of each lekt goes into the notch; the 48 mm side stands upright.

  1. Turn both trestles front-to-back and parallel. Seat both lekter across them in matching front and rear notch pairs.
  2. Put the 1200 × 800 board on top, best face up. Centre it left/right and front/back.
  3. Clamp the board to the lekter. Mark each lekt’s edges at both ends, then draw its centre-line across the top.
  4. Mark four holes per line: about 100, 400, 800 and 1100 mm from the left edge.
  5. Drill a 3 mm pilot at the first mark on each lekt. Tape the bit at 35–40 mm depth.
  6. Make a shallow countersink. Drive two 4.0 × 50 TX20 screws until exactly flush.
  7. Recheck centring. Pilot, countersink and drive the other six screws.
  8. Lift the whole top off, inspect the underside, reseat it, then push every corner. No rocking, sliding or clicking means the trestle table itself is ready.

01 · The result

A folding bench, not a giant fixed table

The saw sits on a compact central bench. Long boards are carried by two separate supports at exactly the height of the saw’s metal table. When you are finished, the saw comes off, the top lifts away, and all four trestles fold flat.

The wooden ribs sit in the trestle notches. Every screw goes into wood.

The 1200 mm bench carries the machine. The wings carry long wood. Leave free air behind the sliding mechanism and keep the dust hose out of that movement zone.

Do not confuse this with a table saw. You are building a bench for a mitre saw (kapp- og gjærsag). The blade still moves down through stationary wood; no wood is pushed through a blade.

02 · Before touching a tool

Separate “building the bench” from “using the saw”

The SKIL manual says the machine must not be used by anyone under 16. An 11-year-old can help measure, mark, hold a square, count screws and test the folded bench while the saw is unplugged and moved aside. Only the adult operates the saw.

The five rules for today

  1. Start on a flat driveway or floor. Do not assemble or test on loose gravel. A trestle foot can settle halfway through the job.
  2. Keep the saw unplugged and away from the bench until the top is complete, seated and stable.
  3. Open each trestle fully. Confirm the legs and spreaders have reached their working position before loading it.
  4. Never screw into or drill the plastic trestles. The moulded top is thin and is not a structural screw joint.
  5. Stop if reality differs from the drawing. Measure the object in front of you. The Stanley dimensions published by shops disagree.

03 · Lay everything out

Parts, tools and the one shopping-list correction

The current build is deliberately small: one ready-sized panel, two wooden ribs and eight screws. The old note that said “screw the panel into the trestles” is obsolete.

Tools

  • Tape measure, sharp pencil and combination square or carpenter’s square
  • Drill/driver, TX20 bit and 3 mm pilot drill
  • Combination pilot/countersink bit if you have one
  • Straightedge or spirit level at least 600 mm long
  • Two scraps of cardboard or thin plywood for shims
  • Safety glasses and hearing protection for later saw use

If your battens are still one 2400 mm length: do not improvise a powered cut before the bench exists. Ask the shop to crosscut it, or clamp it to a trestle and use a hand saw. Two pieces close to 1200 mm are fine; exact furniture-grade ends do not matter here.

Orientation matters. “36 × 48” means the batten enters the notch with its 36 mm width. The 48 mm dimension stands upright and creates stiffness. Laying it flat throws away most of the rib’s strength.

04 · Ten minutes that prevent rework

Measure A, B and C before drilling

Do not trust the approximate heights in a catalogue. Write your real measurements on masking tape and stick it to the underside of the top.

05 · Main build

Build the removable bench top

Read through all ten steps once before starting. Check a step only after the result matches its “done when” line; your progress is saved on this device.

Prepare a flat build area

5 minutes · no tools

  1. Sweep a level patch of driveway or solid garage floor wider than 2 × 2 m.
  2. Move the unplugged saw outside this area. Lower and transport-lock the head.
  3. Put screws and drill bits in a tray—not on the plywood where they can scratch it.

Done when: the floor is firm, the saw cannot be started, and you can walk all the way around the work.

Inspect and open two trestles

5 minutes · use the best-matching pair

  1. Check every foot, hinge and spreader for shipping damage.
  2. Open the legs fully and press down on the top—not hard, just enough to confirm it does not fold or rock.
  3. Compare the two tops with the spirit level. Set aside any visibly twisted trestle for wing duty.

Done when: both trestles stand without rocking and have the same usable notch pattern.

Choose two matching notch rows

10 minutes · this fixes the rib spacing

  1. Orient both trestles front-to-back and parallel, about 700–800 mm apart left-to-right.
  2. On each trestle, choose one notch toward the front and one toward the rear. The pair should be as far apart as practical while still fitting under the 800 mm panel.
  3. Put a batten into the chosen front notch on both trestles; put the other into the rear pair.
  4. Confirm each batten seats without force. Do not hammer wood into plastic.

If 36 mm does not fit: stop and remeasure the notch. Do not shave the trestle or force it. The alternate cleat method is explained under Troubleshooting.

Done when: the two ribs lie parallel, 48 mm tall, and are supported by both trestles.

Dry-fit and centre the plywood

10 minutes · best face up

  1. Choose the flatter, cleaner plywood face as the permanent top.
  2. Lower the panel onto the ribs with the 1200 mm direction running left-to-right and 800 mm front-to-back.
  3. Centre it left-to-right over the two trestles. Measure the overhang at both ends; make the values equal.
  4. Centre it front-to-back over the two ribs. Keep a useful free lip at front and rear for clamps.
  5. Put the saw—still unplugged—on the panel for a fit check. Confirm the entire base and all four feet are supported. Then remove it again.

Done when: the plywood is square to both ribs, has balanced overhangs, and supports the whole saw footprint.

Underside plan and eight screw positions

The ribs run the full 1200 mm length. The trestles cross under them front-to-back. Screw positions are about 100, 400, 800 and 1100 mm from one end—precision is not important; even spacing and solid wood below are.

Mark both rib centre-lines

10 minutes · do not guess from above

  1. Clamp the plywood gently to both ribs so nothing can shift.
  2. At the left and right edges, mark the front and rear edges of each rib.
  3. Find the midpoint between each pair of marks. A 36 mm rib’s centre is 18 mm from either edge.
  4. Use the square or straightedge to draw two faint centre-lines across the top.
  5. On each line mark four holes about 100, 400, 800 and 1100 mm from the left edge.

Done when: there are exactly eight cross marks, all centred over solid rib—not over empty plastic.

Pilot-drill the first two holes

10 minutes · make a hinge before doing all eight

  1. Fit a 3 mm pilot drill. Mark 35–40 mm depth with tape on the bit so you do not drill through the 48 mm rib.
  2. Wear eye protection. Hold the drill perpendicular to the plywood in both directions.
  3. Drill one end hole in the front rib and the diagonally opposite end hole in the rear rib.
  4. Stop, remove dust, and confirm both holes emerged into the rib centre.

Why only two? If something slipped, you correct two holes—not eight. The diagonal pair pins the layout without letting it swivel.

Countersink and drive the first two screws

10 minutes · flush, never buried

  1. Cut a shallow countersink just wide enough for the screw head.
  2. Drive one 4.0 × 50 TX20 screw into each pilot hole at low driver speed.
  3. Stop the moment each head is level with the plywood. Do not crush a bowl around it.
  4. Recheck all overhangs and rib alignment before continuing.

Done when: the panel cannot slide, the ribs remain seated, and both heads are exactly flush to the touch.

Drill and drive the remaining six

20 minutes · work from the ends inward

  1. Drill, countersink and drive the remaining end holes first.
  2. Recheck that each rib is straight; clamp any small bow toward the pencil line.
  3. Complete the four inner holes.
  4. Run a bare palm carefully over every head. Nothing should catch.

Done when: there are four flush screws in each rib, no split wood, and no visible gap between plywood and rib.

Lift, inspect and reseat the top

10 minutes · test the removable design

  1. With one adult at each end if needed, lift the complete top straight up.
  2. Turn it enough to inspect the underside: all screw tips must remain inside the ribs.
  3. Write FRONT, LEFT and today’s A/B/C measurements underneath.
  4. Lower it back so both ribs drop into the same four notches.

Done when: the top lifts off without tools and returns to the same location without forcing.

Test stability before adding the saw

10 minutes · the table need not be earth-level

  1. Press down over each corner. The opposite corner must not rise.
  2. Push gently from left, right, front and rear. The top must not slide in the notches.
  3. Put the level front-to-back, left-to-right and diagonally. The important result is no twist and no rocking; perfect level to the horizon is optional.
  4. If a foot rocks, shim under that rubber foot with a firm plywood scrap. Never make a soft cardboard foot on damp ground.

Do not continue if it walks, folds, twists or clicks. Remove the top, verify both trestles are fully open, and find the cause. The weight of the saw is not the cure for an unstable bench.

Done when: all four corner pushes feel dull and solid; nothing shifts or lifts.

06 · The machine

Position and secure the SKIL 1321

The manufacturer allows the saw to be fixed through its four mounting holes or clamped to the work surface. For the first sessions, clamps are the reversible choice: you can discover the best position before drilling the finished top.

Place the unplugged saw and test every movement

15 minutes · no blade power

  1. Get adult help lifting if needed. Use the transport handle and the base handhold—not the switch handle or cable.
  2. Centre the base left-to-right. Keep the operating controls and front clamp lip clear.
  3. Leave about 400 mm of clear space behind the rear movement and dust path.
  4. Still unplugged, unlock the transport pin. Slowly sweep the full slide, 50° left/right mitre range and intended bevel positions.
  5. Confirm no part of the saw, guard, fence, slide, clamp or dust hose touches the bench edge, wall, ribs or fasteners.
  6. Mark the four feet and the preferred clamp locations lightly in pencil.

Done when: the complete dry movement is unobstructed and the full base remains supported in every position.

Clamp the saw firmly

10 minutes · follow the manual’s mounting illustration

  1. Use at least two sound screw clamps at manufacturer-approved base or mounting areas, ideally diagonal from one another.
  2. Protect the plywood with thin scrap pads; do not put pads where they let the clamp slide.
  3. Tighten evenly until the base cannot shift by hand. Do not bend the cast base or clamp plastic controls.
  4. Repeat the full unplugged movement check. A clamp handle must not enter the blade, turntable or slide path.
  5. Push and pull the saw base with both hands. If the machine moves independently of the bench, improve the mounting before use.

Done when: saw and bench behave as one object, with all mechanisms and controls free.

Permanent mounting later: use the four mounting holes with bolts, large flat washers and locking nuts—not wood screws relying on 12 mm plywood. Choose a bolt diameter that passes freely through the real mounting hole and a length that leaves only a few threads beyond the locking nut. Keep bolt ends clear of trestles and hands. Do this only after the clamped position has proved itself.

07 · Accuracy lives here

Bring both long-board supports to saw-table height

A long board must rest on the left wing, the SKIL’s table and the right wing without tipping. If a wing is even several millimetres low or high, the board can lift away from the fence and make a square saw look inaccurate.

Set one trestle on each side and match the height

20–40 minutes · calculate, then verify physically

  1. Open the third and fourth trestles fully on the same firm floor.
  2. Use the calculator’s required support height above bare trestle to choose a board on edge. A 36 × 148 may suit; do not assume—measure its real height and subtract the notch depth.
  3. Seat the support board in a notch. Add hard, broad shims between support and workpiece surface as needed.
  4. Lay a straight, known-flat board or long straightedge across the left support, saw table and right support.
  5. At each boundary, try to slide paper under the straightedge. Adjust until the paper drag feels the same across all three surfaces.
  6. Label and save each shim pack. Left and right may differ because the floor differs.

Done when: a long board stays against the saw fence without you pressing an end up or down.

Level to the floor is secondary. Co-planar with the saw table is the goal. Recheck whenever you move the station.

08 · Stop before switching on

The first-use gate

The website is not the saw manual. Read the Norwegian SKIL 1321 instructions that came with the machine before the first cut. The checklist below only catches setup errors specific to this bench.

Pass all checks, then make one scrap cut

Adult only · full PPE

  • Bench is on firm ground; no foot rocks; trestles are fully open.
  • All eight bench screws are flush; ribs are seated in all four notches.
  • Saw is secured through approved mounting areas and cannot move.
  • Blade guard moves freely and closes immediately; blade and table insert look undamaged.
  • Slide, mitre and bevel paths are clear; nothing is stored behind or beneath the moving mechanism.
  • Dust hose cannot touch the lower guard or cut path.
  • Workpiece is inspected for screws, nails, severe bow and loose knots.
  • Workpiece lies flat against table and fence, and is clamped with the supplied workpiece clamp.
  • Both hands can remain at least 100 mm from either side of the blade path.
  • Eye and hearing protection are on; loose clothing, hair and jewellery are secured.
  • Outdoors: use an outdoor-rated, fully unrolled 16 A extension and 30 mA RCD as specified by SKIL.
  • Everyone else stands outside the work area; no one acts as a human “wing”.

First scrap cut

  1. With power disconnected, place and clamp one straight scrap at least large enough to hold safely.
  2. Move the saw through a complete simulated cut to check clearances.
  3. Connect power. Stand in the normal operating position, not in line with the blade.
  4. Let the blade reach full speed before it touches wood. For a sliding cut, pull the head out without cutting, lower it, then push through the work as the SKIL manual instructs.
  5. Release the switch, keep the head down and wait for the blade to stop completely before raising it or reaching for the offcut.
  6. Disconnect power. Check every clamp, foot, rib and screw for movement. Recheck the cut with a reliable square.

Passed when: nothing moved, the work stayed flat, and the cut is square without forcing the wood.

09 · Diagnose, don’t compensate

If something feels wrong

The 36 mm ribs do not fit the trestle notches

Do not force them and do not cut the plastic. Verify that the batten is oriented 36 mm wide and 48 mm tall. If the actual notches are narrower or positioned poorly, use the ribs as anti-slide cleats: place the panel on the bare trestles, clamp it, then fit wooden cleats snugly alongside—not into—the trestle beam so the top cannot slide. Each cleat still screws only to the plywood and remains removable with the top. Re-test rocking and clamp access before loading the saw.

The top rocks after all eight screws are installed

First move to known-flat ground. Then confirm both trestles are fully open and the same pair used during assembly. Lift the top and inspect for one rib failing to seat fully or one screw tip protruding. Do not pull a twisted top flat by tightening the saw mounting; correct the seating or replace a warped component.

The bench slides sideways when pushed

The ribs are probably not captured by matching notches, or the trestles are not square to them. Reseat the ribs, turn both trestles parallel and add mass only after geometry is correct. A toolbox may sit on the lower trays within their rating; weight is not a substitute for positive location.

A long board lifts away from the fence

One wing is high or low. Remove the workpiece, disconnect power and put the straightedge across all three support surfaces. Adjust hard shims until there is no daylight. Never hold one end in the air while cutting and never ask another person to replace a support.

The cut is not square

Check in this order: flat workpiece against fence; equal-height wings; no saw or bench movement; clean fence; then the saw’s 0° adjustment. Most day-one “saw accuracy” problems are support or workpiece problems. Do not alter factory stops until the setup passes the earlier checks.

A screw head will not sit flush

Back it out. Deepen the countersink a fraction, clear chips and drive again at low speed. Do not use maximum driver torque to crush the head into the top. Replace a damaged screw rather than accepting a chewed TX recess.

The screw spins without tightening

The hole in the rib is stripped. Remove the screw, shift the hole at least 30 mm along the rib and drill a fresh pilot. Leave the failed hole empty or fill it with a glued wood sliver later. Do not install a wider screw close beside the stripped hole.

The floor is gravel

Build and test on the driveway for now. Small feet migrate in gravel and a shim can disappear into it. The researched permanent answer is a firm work platform, not plastic sheeting over gravel. Never vacuum loose stones into the shop vacuum.

10 · The point of the design

Pack down without undoing the bench

  1. Disconnect the saw. Wait for all parts to stop and let the blade cool.
  2. Return mitre and bevel settings to the transport position, retract the slide and engage the transport lock exactly as the SKIL manual describes.
  3. Remove saw clamps. Lift by the transport handle plus the base handhold—never the cable or switch handle.
  4. Lift the bench top straight off. Store it on edge, dry and off concrete or gravel.
  5. Remove wing boards and labeled shims. Fold the four empty trestles only after they are unloaded.
  6. Brush or vacuum the saw after disconnecting it. Do not let the vacuum ingest gravel.
